5 Keys to Long Term Success After Surgery

Setting goals for your weight loss journey is an important first step toward a healthier body - but sticking to the plan is where the real work lies. It's not always easy, and some people experience weight regain over time. The good news is that a handful of consistent habits can make an enormous difference to your long-term results.

Here are five tips worth keeping front of mind.

1. Prioritise Education

Whoever said knowledge is power was onto something. The more you understand about how your body has changed after surgery, and how to care for it to get the best results, the easier and more motivating the journey becomes. It's far more empowering than simply plodding along, eating protein and taking vitamins without really understanding why.

When you understand food, nutrition and how surgery affects your body, you're far more likely to make the necessary changes and build positive new habits that stick.

A word of advice on where to get that education: use social media for support, not as your primary source of medical information. If you have genuine concerns or questions, direct them to a professional rather than a well-meaning group who are also finding their own way. Books by licensed practitioners are a great resource, and your relationships with your doctor, surgeon and especially your dietitian are lifelong - make sure you're happy with your team and that their door is always open. Groups managed by a qualified professional tend to offer the most reliable support.

2. Prepare your food

Remember the 5 P's: Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

Plan your week ahead, and don't be afraid to visit a few different shops to get quality ingredients. It's an unfortunate reality that supermarkets stock less genuine "food" and more packaged products every year. Invest in a food storage system that suits your portion sizes, and cook ahead of time where you can; batch prep takes the pressure off busy days and makes healthy choices the easy choice.

3. Set Yourself Up to Avoid Temptation

A simple trick: shop the perimeter of the supermarket in a big U shape. Enter through the fruit and vegetables, move across the back for meat and dairy, and up the other side for bakery and deli. Most of what sits in the middle aisles is processed, low-nutrient food and marketing, much of the temptation you simply don't need.

Being mindful about what you bring home makes staying on track far easier; you can't be tempted by what isn't in the cupboard.

And here's a small but powerful habit: start your day with protein. Starting the day with protein helps many people feel fuller and eat less overall. Overnight oats with nuts, seeds, frozen berries and yoghurt is real, nourishing food, a world away from a whole aisle of sugary cereals.

Start the day with protein, and you will eat less calories overall – this is fact.

4. Keep Your Favourites - In Balance

WLS doesn't mean eating an immaculate diet with no joy in it- that's neither realistic nor much fun, and so much of our social life is built around food.

The approach we love is 90/10: around 90% nutritious, protein-rich meals with quality carbs, and 10% food you genuinely love. The trick is to make that 10% really count. Don't waste precious space on food that doesn't serve you, but when you do have a treat, make sure it's something that truly makes your heart sing, and savour every mouthful. Be present with the taste, texture and smell. No half measures!
